This disc is a true evidence that bass guitar may be a leading instrument and a bass guitarist - a remarkable composer and arranger.
Album review“Anton Gorbunov has a long time ago won the title of one of the best modern bass guitarists, his background includes participation in numerous concert and studio projects that an absolutely different in style, esthetics and target audience. In the beginning of the year the album “Bass magic” was released under “ArtBeat Music” label. And now, without a long break, one more Gorbunov’s disc is released under the same label – a new edition of “Idea Fixx”, a very unexpected but logical release.
The musician turned to his earlier album, having refreshed the mastering and having added to the compositions more transparent and warm sound. 10 years after the disc was released Gorbunov’s music is capable of living beyond fashion, leaving topical, daring, and extremely driving.
The reason is that the musician is not oriented to Western stars and to search for “fashion features” but professes his own ideas about the beautiful. As a result, restraint and nobility of intonation, absence of bare romantic expression. His solo fragments are played by Gorbunov very subtly, sensually enough, not at least in a sentimental way. Even in the moments when, it seems, music requires rhythmical pressing (duet with the drummer Piotr Ivshin in “Mr.Fixx”), the bass guitar doesn’t allow folksy intonations. With all of this, Gorbunov doesn’t “close” sound in accompaniment but plays open and brightly (excepts the moments when some kind of “mist” is necessary).
Despite the fact that a lot of musicians participated in the disc recording, the album is solid and is built well dramaturgically. And it’s clear without saying, that technically all the pieces are played impeccably.
This edition is a valuable gift to lovers of instrumental jazz-rock esthetics. For other listeners the disc may become a pleasant acquaintance with a very diverse world of fusion music.”
